Tribute to David Alun Williams

David passed away peacefully during the night of 29/30th January 2020 at the nursing home where he had been for the past few months.

Born on 19.5.1948 in Denbigh, David studied at Bangor Normal College, becoming a teacher in 1969 and was a former Primary School Headteacher.

He represented Bangor Normal College Harriers 1966-69 and Wrexham AAC from 1969.

David was Vice Chairman of Wrexham AAC 1975-86, and Club Chairman from 1986 to 2018. He was a Life Member and Honorary Life Vice President of the club.

David was Secretary of the North Wales Cross Country Association from 1973 to 2018, organising league & championship races, and teams for the UK Inter Counties XC Champs. In 2018 he was made a Life President of the North Wales Cross Country League

He was a Level 3 Endurance Official and he received a North Wales ‘Services to Road Running Award’ in 2012 to mark the 50th anniversary of the North Wales 10 mile Road Champs, which he organised for many years, and all the road races he officiated at over the years eg.Flintshire 10k (20+ years), Helena Tipping10k (25+ years), Village Bakery Half Marathon (20+ years), Border League races etc.

David competed in over 100 North Wales XC League races as well as organising them, and the North Wales XC Champs, plus the North Wales 10 mile Road Champs. His best road race times were : 5 mile (28.12) in 1982, 10m (57.14) in 1977, Llyn Tegid (67.53) 1982, half marathon (81.08) 1985, and marathon (2.50.15) 1984.

David was a Life Member of Welsh Athletics (2005), with a Meritorious Service Award (1994), Award of Honour (2013) and a Lifetime Achievement Award (2016).

David will be sadly missed by all those who he came into contact with in both athletics and also cricket where he enjoyed a such a distiguished career as an umpire.
